The music of the Zulu people is a vast as it is unique. Used for a wide array of rituals and events, the music comes in a variety of forms and functions. But these forms would be meaningless if it were not for the different types of musical instruments that help to express it. Instruments used in traditional Zulu music can be broken down into 5 categories and involve everything from drums, to wood winds, even stringed instruments each one adding its own uniqueness to Zulu music (African Musical Instruments)
A major group of instruments used in Zulu music revolve around different forms of drums such as djembe, hourglass, clay pot, even cylindrical with each one adding its own sound to the event it is used for. Certain types of string instruments such as harps, musical bows and even different types of lyres are also used in the music along with wind instruments such as animal horns, gourds, flutes and tusks. Even objects such as different types of xylophones, bells, sticks, rattles and even foot stamping and hand clapping are used in traditional Zulu music (African Musical Instruments). With the passing of time, the Zulu people found a way to incorporate their surroundings, environment, even their own bodies and voices to create and completely unique form of cultural music.
